Short Treats
Starbucks Pistachio Latte
Happy Saturday!
Welcome to a new type of post I’m calling "Short Treats"—bite-sized reviews for things that don’t quite need a full-length blog post. Think of it as the blog equivalent of YouTube Shorts.
Today started as a simple trip to town to buy a new cookbook (stay tuned for that review), but thanks to winter's icy grip, it felt more like navigating a bobsled track. Living on a hill in January? Definitely a winter sport.
While passing Costa, I couldn’t help but wonder what their post-Christmas menu might look like—surely nothing could top the Black Forest Hot Chocolate.
There was no adverts in the window, whatever it is I shall wait to find out, then I looked across the road at Starbucks, a very green poster in the window caught my eye: Pistachio Latte.
I wasn't actually going to get a coffee out, personally its very rare, there has to be a reason to hand over many hard earned pennies for something I can make in a minute at home, but Pistachio sounded too weird to pass by.
Grande to take away sounded good— however it tasted, I would have something to defrost me as I freeze my nuts off, pun very much intended, on the tundra hike home.
They made a bright green frozen drink, I was re-reading the poster to make sure it was meant to be hot, advertising an ice drink in January would be a bit weird— turns out the girl in front of me ordered an iced matcha, glad it wasn't mine, at -1°C outside a questionable choice.
Now, the drink itself: it genuinely tasted like someone had got a decent sized handful of pistachios and chucked them in my coffee, I say coffee, Starbucks I never really find tastes that much of coffee. (Golden rule: Costa if you want actual coffee; Starbucks if you want novelty.)
Often when a drink has a flavoured syrup, its only a resemblance, but I was astonished how close it was—second to the Eggnog latte, which granted has actual Eggnog in it—the question though, is it a flavour you want your coffee to taste of?
Past the first few sips, which were mostly just being impressed that it actually tasted like salted pistachios, I found myself questioning if i liked it—clearly it wasn't horrible, just a bit weird.
About half way home I came to the conclusion that its really nice, you just need to get past the oddity of its flavour being in coffee. I assume pistachio coffee is a bit like farmer's coke (peanuts in Coca Cola), not something I've tried, but I hear is surprisingly nice, despite sounding awful.
In the end, I decided I liked it. It’s definitely a drink for those who enjoy the novelty factor or just love pistachios. Would I order it again? Yes.
If you’re curious, give it a go—unless, of course, you have a nut allergy!
That’s all for today. Just a little story to share about a random discovery that brightened my day. Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you next time—possibly with a review of the cookbook that snowballed into this post!
